What is Vaper’s Tongue and How Do You Treat It?

Every vaper encounters it at some point. Taking a hit from your favorite e-juice, and as the vapor fills your throat, realizing that it does not taste right; as if it is diluted or missing something. The liquid has not gone bad, nor has the coil or any other part of the mod. What this experience is called is Vaper’s Tongue. It can be jarring, to say the least, especially when you have never experienced it before. Fortunately, it is nothing serious, passing by quicklyand with no lasting consequences. Thoroughly understanding what Vaper’s Tongue is and what is going on can help you manage it when it does unexpectedly strike.

Causes of Vaper’s Tongue

Your mouth has anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 taste buds that register five basic flavor types: sweet, sour, savory, salty and bitter. Your sense of smell fills in the details with additional chemical receptors. Vaper’s Tongue involves one or both of these senses faltering and messing with how you perceive taste. There are a number of causes for losing your sense of taste or smell, and not all have to do with vaping itself:

  • Sensory fatigue or shock - this happens when you experience a single flavor so often that your brain begins to tune it out to prevent overstimulation. It also can happen after you quit smoking and your renewed taste buds become overwhelmed.
  • Dehydration - the compounds in e-juice vapor can draw moisture out of your mouth; your taste buds cannot detect flavors well when dry.
  • Stuffy sinuses - if your lose your sense of smell because of a cold or allergies, your ability to taste things goes with it.
  • Acute stress - as weird as it sounds, your taste buds can take a break when stress builds up. You might be familiar with this if stress makes you lose your appetite.

Treating Vaper’s Tongue

There is no guaranteed cure for Vaper’s Tongue as it has many different causes. However, if you have a sense of why it may have happened to you, you can pair it with a specific treatment. Sensory fatigue can be resolved by cleansing your palate through drinking more water, using mouthwash, or conducting a good brush and rinse. Sometimes you need to wait it out while your taste buds recover from overstimulation.
